I’m having a bit of a Polyphonic Spree renaissance today. At the same time I heard something more than a good song.

(The Polyphonic Spree is the last concert I saw in July 2003 before arriving in Canada.)

When it comes to social media marketing we’re expected to be available all the time.

I honestly believe this has to come from a genuine place – YOU have to be online alot. Not your intern. YOU.

And so, during my Polyphonic Spree extravaganza tonight, I was reminded about how thinly we need to spread ourselves today.

Don’t complain. It just IS.

I’m sure there are lots of parallels to be drawn with the emergence of the social media movement but I thought this one was particularly apt. And very well put together.

I recently started following futurist Gerd Leonhard – the man with the coolest job title.

He and I share at least one thing in common: we’re often asked, ‘Why should I start a blog?’

Lucky for me, Gerd posted this excellent video on his site today – all 1 minute and 38 seconds of it in which Seth Godin (an American entrepreneur, author and public speaker) and Tom Peters (business author and speaker) manage to sum up the answer.

In January, I delivered three lunchtime workshops – open to the public – on the topic of social media.

These were presented by my employer, the National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) – a film and television training school based in Manitoba.

I cover a bunch of things beginning with my definition of social media. I talk about the importance of genuine communication online and why you would even bother to spend so much time working on all these social networking sites.
